What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process using finely ground powders of pigment and resin to coat a surface. During this process, the powder particles are electrostatically charged so that they adhere to the metal surface and are then effectively melted and fused together in the curing process.

The process?

During the powder coating process, specialised spray guns are used to apply powder to the part being coated. The powder is charged by an electrode which creates an ion cloud. Powder particles pick up a negative charge as they pass through this ion cloud and because the parts are grounded they are electrostatically attracted to the part being sprayed. Once the powder has been evenly adhered, the parts are placed in a curing oven where the powder bonds to the surface. Once the part exits the oven and cools down, the process is complete.

Powder coating vs wet painting?

Quality powder coating offers a finish that is superior – better scratch resistance, better chemical resistance and better impact resistance. The process is being used for an ever increasing number of products resulting in a switch from liquid finishing to powder coating as a way to produce consistent, high quality and durable finishes. The result… maximum production volume, cost saving, improved efficiency and compliance.

What can be powder coated?

Nearly anything metallic can be powder coated.

Does exposure to elements effect powder choice?

Yes. Most definitely. “Weatherability” is an important consideration when choosing a powder. UV energy can cause gloss loss or colour to change or fade. Be sure to advise us as to whether your product will be used internally or externally so that we can advise you accordingly.

Does powder coating prevent rust?

Powder coating does not prevent rust. However, it is a durable and long-lasting protective coating, Longevity of the product will depend on the environment and how the items are maintained and used. A comprehensive & effective pre-treatment process when followed correctly also assists greatly in prolonging the life of the product.

Will powder coating cover up?

Powder coating is able to cover up minor scratches and imperfections but cannot cover up poor workmanship. Remember, the coating is only as good as the surface it is being applied to.

Why would one choose powder coating over wet spray painting?

Generally Less Expensive
Generally costs less to powder coat a part once than have it painted several times over the course of its lifespan.

Less Set Up Time
Not subject to the time it takes to set up and break down when using wet spray paint method.

Quick Curing
When using a wet spray painting process, it can take weeks before a part is “cured”. Powder coated parts are “cured” as soon as coated parts cool down.

More Durable
Powder coating has a much more durable finish compared to wet spray paint. Powder coated surfaces are more resistant to chipping, scratching or degrading over time. Powders are also designed to withstand chemicals, fading, and general wear and tear.

Can you powder coat over wet spray coatings?

No you can’t. It is preferable to have new / virgin parts to be pre-treated and coated. Stripping of parts is possible, but this is very time-consuming and can be expensive.

Powder coating process and the environment?

Powder coating is generally an “environmental friendly” process. Liquid finishes contain solvents which have pollutants known as volatile organic compounds (VOC’s). However, the powder coating contains no solvents and releases only negligible amounts of VOC’s into the atmosphere. Most of the powder coating over-spray (the particles that do no adhere to the surface) can be reused. This almost eliminates the waste usually associated with liquid finishing processes.

What colours and textures are available?

Powder coating offers a vast range of colours and textures. These included finish options, colour options, and texture options. The most common textured powders are wrinkles and hammertones which are a great choice for parts that will need to be able to take some abuse. Read more here
