The impact of rust – now you see me… now you don’t!

Powder coating is the popular choice of people wanting a strong, long-lasting and durable coating option. However regardless of the item or product you wish to powder coat, a key factor to take into account is the overall condition of the material surface prior to coating as this can have a major impact on the finished product’s lifespan.

While rust can be a common problem, it usually starts out as a small issue in metals that are exposed to the elements. However, if left untreated it can quickly develop into a much bigger issue that covers the entire surface.

There is a misconception that powder coating is a rust inhibitor or that powder coating over rust will prevent its further development. However, depending on the severity of the rust problem, the reality is that rust may continue to grow even after a component has been powder coated. Should you choose to simply ignore the issue and powder coat over rust, the underlying issues are still present even if the overall appearance of the surface is improved. What’s more, there is a very real chance that the rust will grow and begin to develop under the powder coating, causing the coating to peel off.

An effective pre-treatment when coupled with quality paint enables metals to resist rust or corrosion much better than paint alone. It is important to note that not all pre-treatments are the same. Do not be fooled by an all in one manual wipe down option as this may not adequately clean and prepare the material surface. A comprehensive pre-treatment is required to cleanse the surface of the material thoroughly and allows for good paint adhesion. It also enhances the overall rust and corrosion resistance of the metal. This will help maximise the lifespan of the coated product. A thorough pre-treatment prior to coating is therefore an essential part of the process and should never be over-looked or shortcuts taken.

Reputable powder coaters will be able to provide support, advice and solutions to potential problems such as dealing with and removing rust prior to coating.
